Bowling Balls and Safety Pins
Every year at this time, hundreds of tattooed, drunk and disorderly degenerates invade Sin City for the annual BYO Records Punk Rock Bowling Tournament. Now in its 9th year, the event features bowling, poker, punk rock shows galore, and massive amounts of beer consumption. Did we mention there is drinking?
The tournament is comprised of 168 teams of four, who will compete for $12,000 in prize money and sponsor-donated merchandise, but more importantly, who will wreak havoc upon the unsuspecting bowling alley patrons while sipping vodka out of miniature plastic cowboy boots. The team to beat this year is from Epitaph Records, who won last year, and who clearly know what to do with their balls.
The event is being held at Sam’s Town and will feature an opening-night show by the Bouncing Souls and a closing-night extravaganza from Black Flag and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. But because so many bands attend the tournament, there are generally lots of other great shows going on that same weekend. It’s been several years since anyone from YuppiePunk World HQ has attended, but the event is one of a kind fiasco party, and if you’re anywhere near Las Vegas this weekend, make sure you stop by the Sam’s Town Lanes to witness the scene in all it’s mohawked glory.
