I Was a Teenage Teenager
Your teenage years most likely went one of two ways: You were either the star quarterback who dated the head cheerleader, thereby peaking socially at the ripe old age of 17. Or you had a bad haircut and were hideously socially awkward, biding your time until you moved away for college where you prayed you’d never come into contact with anyone who’d ever met you before (gee, can you tell which one we were?) It’s a great time in life. And also a terrible one. Which likely explains why there are a ridiculous amount of bands that use Teenage in their moniker. Here’s a rundown on some of them:
There are at least four groups called the Teenagers.
There’s the great Glaswegian power pop group known as Teenage Fanclub, who’s “Bandwagonesque” may be one of the finest records of the ’90s.
There’s Teenage Head, one of Canada’s most important punk bands, a sort of Great White North version of The Ramones.
Brooklyn hipsters My Teenage Stride have been making acclaimed records since 1993.
There are the Teenage Kicks, the Teenage Beat and .
There were two punk rock bands with a similar names: the Teen Idols and the Teen Idles, the latter of which featured Ian MacKaye pre-Minor Threat.
Led by Lydia Lunch, were pioneers of New York’s No Wave movement.
There are Teenage Girls, Teenage Rage and Teenage Rehab.
There’s the German techno anarchists known as , no doubt one of the greatest named Teenage bands.
There’s Teenage Bottlerocket, a three-chord pop-punk band from Wyoming, who grew out of the ashes of the Lillingtons.
There’s Teenage Confidential, Teenage Delinquents and the Teenage Alcoholics.
Despite their moniker, Teenagers in Tokyo aren’t Japanese, but rather Australian.
, an experimental British psychedelic group, were a band twice, once in the late ’70s, and again in the early ’90s when they signed to Creation Records.
And don’t forget about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, not really a band, but they did make records. Their “” tour and subsequent album was about the power of rock ‘n’ roll and its ability to literally defeat enemies. Cowabunga, dude!
