The New Lows Are The New Black
Fans of twangy, punky, indie rock will no doubt dig the merry melodies of Brooklyn threesome and their first LP in nearly seven years, “Atlantic Pacific.” The band originally got together after the demise of Orlando, Florida’s , a fierce pop-punk band that just may have become the Alkaline Trio if they hadn’t broken up in the late ’90s.
In 2001, The New Lows issued their debut album, “The Low Road,” a raw document of scrappy, gruff indie rock which hinted at the greatness that would follow. Five years later, and after a move to Brooklyn, the band made their “Free EP” available for download from their website (you can still get it here) for free, natch, and subsequently logged over 20,000 downloads of it. Many of the six songs on that EP ended up re-recorded and reworked on “Atlantic Pacific,” a ten-song LP that segues seamlessly from uptempo punk rock to prodding power pop, summoning the spirits of bands like Jets to Brazil, Superchunk, the Strokes and Wings. The band have toured sporadically throughout the East Coast and beyond, but why the band hasn’t yet broken through remains a mystery.
