Onstage Altercations Revisited
With today’s news and subsequent video that Noel Gallagher of Oasis was injuring during the band’s set at the Virgin Music Festival in Toronto over the weekend, we were reminded that onstage violence from concert goers isn’t uncommon. We did a roundup of similar altercations nearly two years ago after a video surfaced of Jeff Tweedy of Wilco punching a guy who jumped up on stage while he sang.
And of course it was only a matter of time before someone was actually assassinated onstage, a title sadly bestowed on Dimebag Darrell after a distraught fan fatally wounded the Pantera/Damageplan guitarist while he performed. Here’s more about the Oasis attack from Toronto’s Globe and Mail. And check out our roundup of onstage altercations here.
Oasis was midway through its headlining set at this year’s Virgin Festival when a man rushed the band from the side of the back-stage area and pushed Gallagher during the 1995 hit “Morning Glory.”
Security personal apprehended an unnamed intruder who was later charged with assault.
After a short break, Oasis did return to the stage to complete the concert, performing wistful hits “Don’t Look Back in Anger” and “Wonderwall” and three other songs before finishing with the Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus.”
However, the mood of the performance and of the crowd was notably subdued upon the show’s resumption.
