We’re Live Motherf***ers!: Top 10 Clips of Celebrities Using Profanity on Live TV
Hearing a bad word on television isn’t so exciting if you’re watching HBO, Showtime or even FX, but if you’re watching the Super Bowl or Academy Awards or favorite morning news show, hearing one of your favorite movie stars unleash a parade of profanities is rather thrilling. In some weird way, way it feels like you’re getting one over on the man. Granted, most of the clips below are fairly benign, and most of them accidental, but hearing Jane Fonda say “cunt” in front of millions of viewers on a “classy” morning news show like “Today” gives us kind of a rush — if only to see the way it makes Meredith Vieira squirm. Here now, the top 10 clips of celebrities using profanity on live television.
DIRTY DIANE
In career filled with great lines written by great writers (Woody Allen, Francis Coppola), Diane Keaton freestyled one of her best during the promo blitz for “Mad Money,” when she told Diane Sawyer on “Good Morning America” that if she had been more attractive she wouldn’t have had to… well, you’ll see.
WHAT CHU TALKIN’ ABOUT WILLIS?
Courtside at a New Jersey Nets game, Bruce Willis has a few too many halftime beers and closes out his obnoxious interview segment with the most famous line from his “Die Hard” franchise.
FARRELL’S F-WORD FIASCO
While at Sundance to promote his indie flick “In Bruges,” Colin Farrell lets the F-word fly during a live interview with CNN.
THE LOVE SHAQ
Not content to simply let a single F-word go out live to TV audiences, a peeved Shaquille O’Neal lets a second obscenity fly after the announcer reminds him he’s on live television.
BYNUM? I HARDLY KNOW HIM!
Fellow Los Angeles Laker Andrew Bynum is no Shaq, but he certainly does a good job of emulating his post-game live TV interview swearing style.
TODAY SHOW IS NOT SO FONDA THAT WORD
No doubt Meredith Vieira’s been called one, but it’s still shocking to hear Jane Fonda utter the C-word on morning television, even if it isn’t directed at the host of “Today.”
BLYLEVEN’S BASEBALL BLUNDER
“Oh, we’re live?,” said Minnesota Twins color commentator Bert Blyleven after realizing he let the same bad word slip twice during a live TV promo. “I didn’t know that!” The ex-Major Leaguer apologized during the first inning for his foul ball, but thanks to the internets, his live TV blunder can live on forever.
JERRY-ATRIC
We know Jerry Lewis was funny at some point in his career — but for most of our lifetime he’s been an out-of-his-prime fogey known more for his telethons than his punchlines. Thankfully, Mr. Lewis combined both pillars of his career into a single embarrassing moment during his 2007 Labor Day Telethon. While talking to a cameraman live on the air, he uttered a homosexual slur, which, mid-word, he realized was a bad idea, and quickly changed topics, turning away from the camera. He subsequently apologized, but we’re not sure why — this was his funniest moment in years.
DICE DON’T PLAY NICE
“Go fuck yourself,” Andrew Dice Clay fumed as he ripped his microphone off and left the set of his CNN interview. “Fuck you and fuck the whole fucking network!” Though Dice was irritated through most of the interview (that’s his shtick after all), host Alan Chernoff really baits him by asking the comic about what he’s been doing in his time away from the spotlight.
NEVERMIND THE BILL-OCKS
In this 1976 interview with British chat show host Bill Grundy, the Sex Pistols let loose an onslaught of insults at the presenter. “Go on,” Grundy chides Steve Jones after a few of them, “you’ve got another 5 seconds. Say something outrageous.”
