DVD Review: ‘Comedians of Comedy: Live at the Troubadour’

Rating: B-
As funny as many members of the tour can be, this new live performance DVD suffers from compilation-itis. Because the DVD is a pu pu platter of performances rather than a complete set from any of the individual comedians, it is inconsistent. You never get the opportunity to dive deeper into any of the performers’ material, which is a shame considering the sets from Brian Posehn, Eugene Mirman and Zach Galifianakis are worthy of a full-length DVD treatment of their own. On the other hand, because each comedian is given only a handful of minutes, it’ll likely hold your interest for the entirety of it’s 2+ hour running time. Disappointingly, some of alternative comedy’s biggest stars provide the least interesting moments. David Cross’ bit goes on much too long, and Sarah Silverman’s shown off better jokes on recent award show appearances. Patton Oswalt, however, manages to hold the whole shebang together as the geeky ringleader of this incredibly motley crew. Worth watching? Sure, but mostly just to figure out which comedians you’ll want to go see an entire set from the next time they come through your town. We’d say rent, don’t buy.
