The ‘Metalocalypse’ Is Nigh
If you didn’t catch the first season of Cartoon Network’s “Metalocalypse,” make sure you catch up with season two when it begins on Sept. 23rd. The show follows the five members of the half-American / half-Swedish death metal band known as . The band is made up of William Murderface (bass, though he’s intentionally mixed so low on the records you can’t hear him), Swigsgaar Skwigelf (fastest guitarist alive), Toki Wartooth (second-fastest guitarist alive) Nathan Explosion (vocals), and ex-Snake ‘n’ Barrels drummer Pickles the Drummer.
But here’s the thing, Dethklok are the biggest band in the world — infinitely more influential than any band the Earth has ever seen. In fact, they are the 12th largest economy in the world, just before Belgium, which means they earn several hundred billion dollars annually. The band is so popular in fact, that their fans will do anything the band asks of them, or buy any product the band asks them to endorse. Oh, and they all live in a mansion together — Mordhaus, which is located in Mordland. Songs include “Scuba Tank Filled with Farts,” “Bloodtrocuted,” and “Guts Punched, Balls Threw Up.”
Is the show as stupid and as fantastic as it sounds? Absolutely! Are the songs as stupid and as fantastic as they sound? Absolutely! And the show is filled with in-the-know references — like the burger joint called Dimmu Burger, named after the Norwegian black metal band Dimmu Borgir. That sort of thing is all over “Metalocalypse.”
Dethklok are the brainchildren of comedians Bredan Small and Tommy Blacha, the latter of whom worked as a writer for Conan O’Brien, the WWE, and SNL’s “TV Funhouse” before creating “Metalocalypse.” The show’s first season is airing in reruns now in the Adult Swim block on Cartoon Network, but you can see all the episodes when the first season DVD is released on Oct. 2nd, just one week after Dethklok’s “DethAlbum” is released on Sept. 25th.
See the episode that started the metal madness, which features guest appearances by James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett of Metallica. Here’s “The Curse of Dethklok“:
