Teens! Sex! Drugs! Punk Rock!
Larry Clark is a renowned documenter of youth culture on the fringes — first as an influential photographer, and later as a film director. His most famous film was his first, “Kids,” which was both praised and despised for its frank portrayal of risky adolescent sex and rampant teen drug use. But love him or hate him, these are the themes of Larry Clark. Now in his ’60s, his fascination with teenagers shows no signs of slowing up.
His latest film is “Wassup Rockers,” the real-life story of a group of Hispanic teens from South Central Los Angeles who dig punk rock and skateboarding more than hip-hop and gang banging. They prefer their T-shirts tight, not oversized and baggy. The film is based on a group of kids he met during a photo shoot, and “Wassup Rockers” stars those very same kids –- all non-actors. And if the trailer is any indication, the film should be gritty and fabulous:
The film was shown at both the Slamdance and Toronto film festivals and will be released on June 23rd.
