Surreal Life in the Big City
The art duo of Dan and Kozue Kitchens, aka kozyndan, create beautifully chaotic portraits of life in the big city. They first came to our attention with their panoramic illustration of Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood, which hangs in one of our favorite sushi restaurants, strangely enough, in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood. Their pieces are first drawn on paper, then painstakingly colored in via PhotoShop.
While the urban landmarks the duo use as the settings for their pieces are true to life, the characters that inhabit them are often absurdly surreal, providing a unique fantasy element to their work. Check out the technicolored rabbits that litter the streets of NYC in “What’s Next USA-Chan?,” or the robots seen shopping for comics and T-shirts in “Domo Arigato Mr. Nakamura.” The duo have also populated their favorite neighborhoods in London (“Like Sands Through the Hourglass“) and San Francisco (“The Yum-cha Militia“) amongst others.
You may have also seen their work on record covers. They did the illustration for Weezer’s “The Lion and the Witch” EP, as well as a couple of covers for the Postal Service (“The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” and “Such Great Heights“). However their best known work is likely “Uprisings,” which was created for the magazine Giant Robot, which depicts a tsunami wave made of rabbits. Here’s what it looked like on the cover. And speaking of Giant Robot, the magazine has recently released a pretty book of kozyndan’s work titled “Urban Myths” which you can purchase here.
