Reality TV Catchphrases
While stumbling upon a rerun of “Candid Camera” recently, we were stuck by how ahead of its time that show was. Not only did it pre-date our fascination with reality TV by about 30 years, but it invented the reality TV catchphrase. “Smile, you’re on Candid Camera” became a part of our lexicon, and in recent years, every reality program worth its weight in salt has created one.
Catchphrases of the modern era seem to originate with the success of the game show “The Weakest Link,” whose bitchy British host would utter to eliminated contestants, “You are the weakest link. Good bye.” But it was the success of “Survivor,” and it’s “The tribe has spoken” exit line that made the catchphrase a requisite part the reality show. After all, what self-respecting show wouldn’t come up with its own catchphrase? A good one creates great chatter at the water cooler. But come up with a bad one and you may just hear the head of your network uttering, “You’re fired.”
Next to deciphering that crazy series of numbers on “Lost,” the current TV season’s biggest debate raged over what Martha Stewart might say as she cast off contestants from her version of “The Apprentice.” After much speculation, the line was finally revealed: “You just don’t fit in.” And according to the show’s ratings thus far, Martha doesn’t either. Here’s a rundown of some other popular reality shows and their catchphrases:
